This app, from the Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery, Exeter (RAMM), gives you the opportunity to see Devon and Cornwall through the eyes of artists JMW Turner and Kurt Jackson.

Use the app to pinpoint Turner’s original locations, view his engravings and explore how contemporary artist Kurt Jackson responded to both the landscape and Turner’s work. The app lets you recreate the artists’ works over the modern day view. Then take your own photos and experience the world as an artist. You can share your creations on social media and via email.

J.M.W. Turner visited the South West three times in the 1810s, on commission to make sketches for a topographical publication.
On location Turner rarely used anything except pencil in his sketchbooks. Back in London he painted watercolours derived from these sketches. The watercolours were then engraved and published. Contemporary British artist Kurt Jackson visited twelve locations in Devon and Cornwall depicted in the work of J. M. W. Turner, and then created his own work in response.

This app was inspired by the exhibition Kurt Jackson: Revisiting Turner’s Tourism (10 Sept to 4 Dec 2016). It was held at RAMM and organised in collaboration with the University of Exeter. The exhibition featured Kurt Jackson’s new work, together with the Turner engravings that inspired him.
